Business: Tubular Greetings
Tubular Greetings is a fun, unique way to send a novelty gift. It is mailed in a clear mailing tube filled with candies and trinkets along with your personal message inside. It’s so exciting to receive a Tubular Greeting. Kids and adults who have received one have LOVED them. Pricing includes tax and shipping and it is affordable for all. Do something different and make someone smile by sending something totally tubular – a Tubular Greeting!
What inspired you to start your business?
I quit my sales career about 10 years ago to stay home with my kids. I really enjoyed the working world with the recoginition and making my own money. I’ve had other “mail type” ideas that had too many logistical problems. My youngest will be starting 1st grade in the fall and I thought “it’s either go back to work or start a business” so I started a business. I’m very driven and the idea of sending something in a tube came to me but when I found a clear tube, after researching, I was sold. Tubular Greetings was born!
How long have you been in business?
I’m still new so my website has been live for about 5 weeks.
What did you do in your past work life?
I worked in sales for ADP and did some technical recruiting but always in the social world of sales. I also did some contract recruiting. My most recent “gig” was reality show star as I was a contestant and winner of ABC’s “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” Season 2 (2009)
Describe your ideal workday
I don’t have an ideal workday….I hate monotony. Ideally if I can spend quality time with my kids, quality time with my husband, get some Tubular work in, get some PTA work in, coach a good soccer practice and have dinner on the table in time – I did good!
What have been some of your major successes?
I feel like I’ve had many successes. I think I’m successful by just getting Tubular Greetings off the ground. I was successful with getting on a nationally televised game show on ABC and winning the whole thing. I feel successful with my wonderful kids and loving husband. I have had kinks with other business ideas but overall have succeeded because I worked out those kinks to lead me to Tubular Greetings.
What have been some of your major challenges?
I am at my biggest challenge now with “geting the word out.” I’m just starting to do some advertising because so far it’s been word of mouth. Tubular Greetings will succeed by word of mouth I think because you have to actually see the product to love it.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
My support…..my husband, kids and friends. I am surrounded by good people – major key in business but mostly in life. I’m a pretty positive person and live by “I get one life and I want to do and get all I can out of it.”
Do you have a motivational quote?
As I said above “I get ONE life and I want to squeeze everything I can out of it.” I want to look back when I’m in my 80s and reflect on all the opportunities I took in life. There is not enough time to sulk and wimper. Now is the time and in all stages in my life I have believed “everything always works out!”
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Stay positive and focused. Believe in yourself and your product. Give 110% before you quit – you’ll be amazed at how much can be accomplished with some hard work.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
I am a very involved mother of 2 kids. I coach both of their soccer teams, I am co-president of the PTA, and I was the winner of ABC’s “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” Season 2 (2009) where I left my kids for a long time to compete in these games – and I WON – the only mother on the show and the oldest, might I add. You can view the show on youtube. There is no doubt that managing all of this and a business and a family is hard but I am focused to devote most of my time to my husband and kids and work around them. Coaching gives me time with them and being on the school board allows me to be at the school when they are. I feel like I’m in a win/win situation all over.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
Yes….I have a simple website right now through godaddy.com and there is a thing called “Site Analytics” where you can gauge everything going on with your website like how many hits, what city hits are coming from, what domain is referring them…..it’s great to gauge what advertising is working and what is not working. Great tool.
What is next for your business?
Right now my aim is to really spread the word and get orders – I cannot wait to add new themes. It takes a TON of time to research products for themes because price points, size, likeness of product, etc. but it is fun when one comes together.
