What inspired you to start your business?
I already was a mom entrepreneur, I launched my photo card business www.announcementsgalore.com in 2007. My professional and educational background was in marketing and I still struggled with marketing. I realized that there was a large need out there for affordable marketing assistance.
How long have you been in business?
We launched June 1, 2009.
What did you do in your past work life?
I’ve worked in the marketing and pr field for the past 8 years since college graduation. I still work in the field for a local non-profit.
Describe your ideal workday.
I work during the day, so I take my kids to the sitter and get to the office around 8 a.m. I squeeze in a little email checking and blogging during my lunch break. I pick my kids up and head home around 5. Between 5 and 8 p.m. my undivided attention is with my two children. After baths and they are in bed I’m back on the computer working on projects, updating my blog, researching new ideas and e-mailing clients.
What have been some of your major successes?
Launching Market Mommy has been a success in itself. I’ve grown my mailing list significantly in the past 8 months. I’ve garnered several followers on Twitter and fans on Facebook. I’ve done projects for several moms and have been working effectively, I think, to get our name out there.
What have been some of your major challenges?
Time! Finding enough time to run my businesses the way I want to is a definite challenge. Spending a lot of quality time with my children is my ultimate goal and the reason I’ve started my own businesses. So, I try to keep that in mind every day.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
For sure my kids. My ultimate goal is to be a stay at home mom and work my businesses part-time. Everything I do is working toward that goal.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Don’t give up! It’s definitely a challenge and very difficult at times but persistance can and will pay off.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
When I’m focused on one thing, whether it be business or family, I stay focused. Even if I only have 30 minutes to dedicate toward business I stay focused. I can get a lot more done if I’m completely focused on what I’m doing rather than drawn in different directions. The same is true with my kids. The time I spend with them is much more special if I’m not distracted by my work.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
There are so many, but I think social networking is crucial in this day in age. Networking is such a huge part of business anyway and the internet has really taken it to a whole new level.
What is next for your business?
We have several growth and expansion plans for 2010. We are going to be expanding the marketing services that we offer to include printing as well as expanding our design services. We have a lot in store!
