Manufacture and retail of innovative capacitive touch screen gloves, Agloves.
What inspired you to start your business?
I have been an entrepreneur, and artist, a innovator all of my life. My professional life was in business primarily in new business growth phases.
when the idea for Agloves came up, it was both incredibly functional and beautifully timed. My experience has proven that even great ideas won’t work if the timing is wrong. Agloves had both.
How long have you been in business?
What did you do in your past work life?
I consider myself an approxamist as opposed to a perfectionist. I am a generalist instead of a specialist. My background is in business strategy, marketing, operations and business growth.
Describe your ideal workday.
Some days are filled with pre-work, investigation, research. Some days are filled with post-work, follow up, problem solving. My ideal day is when I can knock things off my list and move the business strategy forward in a meaningful way.
What have been some of your major successes?
The social media marketing team for Agloves has been a major success. We have a small dedicated group of women who are making Agloves known to the world. It’s been a thrill to watch it unfold.
What have been some of your major challenges?
You name it, we’ve had it. Each day seems to have a major challenge. Here’s an example.
People in general can imagine a business idea in different time frames. Some people can see opportunity based on a loosely defined idea. Other people need to see a defined product and exactly how it will be sold in order to get behind the idea. It is a challenge to respect each person’s pacing and bring them along with the process until they can contribute their skills.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
That business is not the most important thing. That despite the current day’s challenges, it is the people in my life, the sun in the sky, the wind, trees… all of these have greater importance. Focusing on my important things helps me to make it through the difficult business days.
Do you have a motivational quote?
May you live every day of your life.” Jonathan Swift
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
- There is much to learn from apparent failures. Life’s beauty often arises from the ashes of defeat. Go into the business witt energy, commitment and aspirations, but know that “winning” is most often not achievable. Business is far to complex for there to be a finish line. Go into business to learn and experience along the path.
- Work harder than you ever expected.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
This is very, very difficult. I am not certain that I have achieved balance yet. I try to work in a place away from home and then find time to turn it off and give complete focus to my family. Some action steps that I take to provide focus are: I square may shoulders toward the person talking to. I make eye contact. I listen to and engage in what they say. I make sure that there is no physical thing, such as a laptop, between me and the other person. I do not multi-task.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
I love my MacBook.
