ConsignMOM.com is an online listing site that caters exclusively to parents looking to buy and sell their new and used children’s things. All standard listings are absolutely free of charge and you keep 100% of the profit for your items (unlike brick and mortar consignment stores and the eBay’s of the world).
What inspired you to start your business?
As a home owner in Arizona with no basement and limited storage in general our family is constantly rotating through our son’s things as he outgrows it – and it seems like the toys keep getting bigger as he does! While the idea of kids consignment is not a new one, I was unable to find anything online that catered exclusively to parents trying to sell their children’s clothes, strollers, and toys that they no longer had use for. I didn’t necessarily feel 100% comfortable selling things on Craigslist or eBay since you really have no idea who is selling or buying. And even though I have had a lot of success selling things through my local children’s consignment store, I thought there could be an easier way… and so began ConsignMOM.com!
How long have you been in business?
ConsignMOM.com was launched in June 2010 and we have been steadily trying to spread the word and build the community of parents.
What did you do in your past work life?
Before becoming a full time SAHM, I was an elementary school teacher. Love kids and definitely will return to the classroom at some point, but for now I love being a WAHM 🙂
Describe your ideal workday.
My ideal workday… hmmm… well it doesn’t have too much “work” involved to be quite honest 🙂 The beauty of ConsignMOM.com is that the site does a nice job of running itself in that other parents are uploading and listing new items. My job is simply to try and get the word out about the site to other parents out there.
What have been some of your major successes?
The biggest success so far are the 335+ Facebook fans and 68+ registered users on the site. Definitely want that number to increase, but I’ll take it for now!
What have been some of your major challenges?
Major challenge for this business is trying to spread the word about the site. Social media outlets along with sites and blogs such as bizziemommy.com are the best ways to get the word out… it’s just a lot of e-mails and phone calls 🙂
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
My two and a half year old son and my baby girl on the way (due Dec. 3rd).
Do you have a motivational quote?
The best motivation always comes from within.
– Michael Johnson
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Someone once told me that “nobody else is going to row my boat” when referring to running a small business… it’s turned out to be very true!
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
Family first, work second – balancing is not always easy, but making time for family (and myself) helps me manage my business.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
Favorite Resource: Google Analytics 🙂 I’m obsessed with the amount of data you can get about the number of people who came to your site, where they came from, how long they stayed, etc.
Favorite Tool: Facebook for sure! Best way to stay involved with people who enjoy the site
What is next for your business?
Expanding (in a meaningful way) into new areas. I have franchises available in quite a few states for other parents looking for a side business to get involved. The franchise owners have a small upfront investment and then are in charge of building their state’s ConsignMOM listings – pretty simple and hopefully people are interested.
Your two cents sales pitch?
- ConsignMOM.com offers FREE standard listings on the site – so if you are looking to sell your kid’s things, you should go ahead and post it on the site – there is absolutely no risk or catch!
- Also, if you are interested in running ConsignMOM.com in your state, please feel free to contact me – I’d love to give you more information (or check out the “Franchising” link at the bottom of the site).
- If you think it’s a good idea, tell your friends 🙂
