I’m the mom inventor of ZipperBack Gloves, snow gloves designed to fit little hands and so easy to put on, a 3 year old can do it!
What inspired you to start your business?
My husband says, “If necessity is the mother of invention then frustration must surely be the father!” My son would not wear mittens and when we found gloves small enough, they were impossible to put on and still didn’t fit!
How long have you been in business?
2 1/2 years
What did you do in your past work life?
Everything sales! Writing, cake decorating, and most recently, Real Estate and Mortgages.
Describe your ideal workday.
My ideal workday is to work on the research and developement of our new products in the morning, post new content on my website, touch our social media accounts, and then have time to be with Mason (6 year old son) so he can see a good balance of work and play time.
What have been some of your major successes?
Having our gloves on store shelves in just over 18 months from inception of the idea. I also negotiated an unprecidented arrangement with our manufacturer so we did not have to pay for large minimums of product from Asia, as a matter of fact, we didn’t pay for any of it up front! We only paid for what we sold in advance, and our manufacturer billed the retailer.
What have been some of your major challenges?
Making a living while I grow our business to a making money point. I talk to other entrepreneurs who say, “You work another job, too?” To that I reply, “How do you not?” Our product is seasonal and we have a manufacturer who does distribution so we don’t have as much to do when we are not selling.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
It would never occur to me to quit. We just have it too good with our exisitng relationships. When it gets tough, I just tell myself, “We’ve gone this far with this little, we can keep going just like ZBG doesn’t exist.” It gets hard when we have to pay in advance for trade shows…that’s when we juggle and sacrifice, sacrifice and juggle.
Do you have a motivational quote?
“Whatever you think, you’re right!” It you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t you can’t. What’ll it be? Smiling!
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to try. When you do nothing, it’s a choice. It’s better to take action even if it turns out to be less than optimal, you will learn something.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
It’s never perfect, never. Some days are more work, and some are more family. It all works out and I don’t worry about it. We do what we have to do.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
Tiwtter and facebook. Connect, you will be amazed how many people want to see you succeed! Put yourself (your business) out there and connect.
What is next for your business?
A line of adult gloves with a big campaign to adults with arthritis and other challenges. We have a few other products coming soon, too!
