Mom Entrepreneur: Natalie Hjelsvold
Business: Calgary Passion
I am an independent consultant educating women on sensuality and intimacy.
I provide in home parties with a fun and relaxed atmosphere, focusing on finding your inner diva!
What inspired you to start your business?
I wanted to help women overcome difficulty finding intimacy in their relationships! I have a bachelor of arts degree in Counseling and I knew that being a mom was my most important job and I didn’t want to be tied to a 9 – 5 setting that didn’t put my family first.
How long have you been in business?
I have been in business for 3 1/2 years.
What did you do in your past work life?
I work part time for an airline currently…I LOVE to travel! I also run a very successful business with a team of women who work their business and we did $250,000 in sales last year. This year, we will double that and be at $500,000 by year end.
Describe your ideal workday.
Up with the children and get them off to school by 8:30 am. Spend an hour with my son playing games or watching some of his favorite shows. Answer emails and return messages. Update all my social media contacts and blog. Lunch with my son and then spend an hour either outside or at an indoor coffee/playground. Home to meet my girls off the school bus. Spend from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm with the kids and husband. Kids to bed by 7:30 pm and then spend 2 hours in my office making calls, booking parties and catching up on responding to emails and correspondence.
What have been some of your major successes?
I have grown a very successful team in an age where the economy is falling and people are very careful where they spend their money. I have been able to provide many extras for my family working my business. We have traveled, enjoyed arts and theatre productions, purchased luxuries at Christmas time and paid down debt.
What have been some of your major challenges?
Adequately managing my time when the season is busy. I can get very caught up in phone calls and answering emails. I am much better at managing my time and making sure that I am totally engaged in the activity at hand, rather than feeling guilty for working or not working at any given moment.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
I am doing the very best I know how to provide for my family and keeping them my top priority. I don’t know if I would be able to do that if I was not working for myself.
Do you have a motivational quote?
Class is an aura of confidence that is being sure with out being cocky. Class has nothing to do with money. Class never runs scared. It is self-discipline and self-knowledge. It’s the sure footedness that comes with having proved you can meet life.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
In all that you do, do it with Passion! Never ever settle for a mediocre exisitance! Everything you do should light your soul on fire.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
Having a wonderful calendar to remind me of ALL things!
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
I love my HTC Dream Phone! It keeps me totally organized and able to work in those small pockets of time that women find every day.
What is next for your business?
I am working on expanding my coaching business. Mentoring other home based business moms to keep their sanity while growing amazing teams.
Your two cents sales pitch?
I am an educator, empowering women from the bedroom to the bank. A romance therapist and sensuality consultant, helping you find your inner diva every day.
