What inspired you start your business?
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my second son and was devastated. I had no idea what diabetes was or how to handle it. After I made it through my diabetes education class, networked with some online friends, and got comfort from family I was able to rethink diabetes. As a diabetic you should check your blood glucose levels several times a day. To do this you need to carry the supplies around with you all the time.
This is where the problem lies. The case supplied with the meters is a morbid, medical-looking black nylon case. Nope not happening in my Coach bag, thank you very much. I began looking for a colorful more vibrant alternative, when my search turned up navy blue I knew I could do something about it. Fearfully I did, and my journey continues today.
How long have you been in business?
Since November of 2007
What did you do in your past work life?
Aviation Electronics Technician for the Navy
Describe your ideal workday.
Wake up early and refreshed with plenty of sleep. Get my boys off to our childcare provider. Grab some breakfast, check emails, make some phone calls. Network Twitter for 45 mins or so, make some ‘cold calls’ (oh yum) Make some headway – Repeat
What have been some of your major successes?
Being featured in Better Homes & Garden’s Diabetic Living Magazine!
What have been some of your major challenges?
Manufacturing, and reaching out to my target market at times. While I know exactly who they are, because my products are based on a disease, it can get touchy sometimes and has to be addressed as so. And just learning the business ropes.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
The idea that what I’m doing is all for a goal I have for me and my family. There is no other option to get there! Unless of course the man upstairs says otherwise 🙂
Do you have a motivational quote?
As Nike would say: Just Do It!
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
No secret here, I wing it everyday. Everyday is a new challenge, and everyday I learn how to cope, manage and succeed. Some days I feel like giving up, or just curling up in a corner and not being needed by anyone. But I find my passion and just get back aboard!
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Gut check your passion, everyday. Without it you don’t have a foundation to grow on!
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
What is next for your business?
Introducing more diabetes lifestyle brand collections, and growing our reach. Every 21 seconds a person is diagnosed with diabetes, it is unfortunate but what I design, I hope takes some of that sting away.
