Mom Entrepreneur: Rand Ragan
Business: GreenBliss EcoSpa
Los Angeles’ premier on-location, and only eco-conscious, spa and wellness service. GreenBliss has a team of certified and licensed Practitioners who provide “green” beauty and health, and holistic lifestyle services for home appointments, spa parties (for adults as well as children), corporate, and special events (product launches, weddings, trade shows, film premiers, fundraising galas, etc.). In addition, Randi provides “greening up” consultations for home, work, and other lifestyle needs, as well as public speaking, workshops, & retreats.
What inspired you to start your business?
I couldn’t find what i wanted in terms of my own needs – looked for a green day spa in LA about 5 years ago and couldn’t find it. Saw the writing on the wall with all things green – after being in the wellness industry and seeing the void of services, products, and companies that should have been there.
How long have you been in business?
Since July 2006
What did you do in your past work life?
Documentary filmmaking 1985 – 1995; Yoga and meditation teacher, spiritual retreat facilitator, creator of custom rituals and ceremonies 1995 – 2006.
Green lifestyle practitioner all my adult life.
Describe your ideal workday.
Short and sweet. Ha ha.
Would love more of them with less problem solving and micro-managing, and more with expansive time for writing, thinking, creating of new services, alliances, and products. Right now I am wearing almost all the hats and it’s a bit exhausting, so getting to the place where there is a larger staff functioning as a well oiled machine would be heaven.
What have been some of your major successes?
Getting some great press early on – Daily Candy, Spa Addicts, Healing Lifestyles & Spas Mag; staying afloat during this recession 🙂
What have been some of your major challenges?
Marketing, marketing, marketing. Figuring out how to gain attention in a town/culture with nano-second attention spans. Capitalization. Learning how to negotiate effectively for every single thing I need from supplies to employee work hours to ad rates: learning what I can offer and ask for in the “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” game.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
My mission for this company is basically the mission I have for my own life: to live consciously, to spread the good, green word about living healthfully, responsibly, and compassionately; that with every conversation I have it’s an opportunity to teach and to lead by example, to help co-create a better world.
Do you have a motivational quote?
“Tell me, what is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
My husband. I honestly could not do this without him. Other than that, it’s eating fanatically healthily – I cannot function (think, cope, decide, etc.) if I do not eat well. I eat for combating stress, germs, lack of sleep, sitting too much at a desk, and aging. Without the discipline of my daily food habits, I would definitely falter. With them, I am happy, full of energy, never sick, and ready to conquer the world.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Ask yourself if every decision you make is one that is ethically, morally, and spiritually in alignment with your core values.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
I do a lot of research when I don’t know something. It comes from my documentary background, which was 90% research. I love research, I love the “sleuthing” process to uncover answers and find comparatives, and to get hard cold information. I think Google is the coolest most useful thing EVER invented. And I love reading trade journals (not necessarily my own but any whose field covers the help I need).
What is next for your business?
Expanding into a national presence with my personal expertise branding. There are many many avenues and alliances to pursue in getting the word out about green living. I am just starting to uncover them.
What is your two cents sales pitch?
Now, more than ever, is the time to understand and implement green health and beauty habits for yourself. GreenBliss EcoSpa and Randi Ragan are the experts to help you do that.
