So as I mentioned in an earlier post I spent the weekend at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. I am so glad I made the trip because it was 110% worth it. There are so many amazing products out there for kids and it’s great to know companies are finally listening to moms and getting them what they need to make life more manageable.
If you have ever been to the Las Vegas Convention Center, the expo took up two floors of the north hall and I wasn’t even able to finish browsing during the two days I was there. I even ran out of business cards. A note to everyone, always bring an entire box of business cards with you, because even though you think you brought enough you will most likely run out. I had to start rationing out my cards by the second day, mid-afternoon.
This is the first year the expo has opened its doors to the online boutique. I am so glad they did. Not every designer was receptive to online retailers which I found a little surprising.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that they feel an online retailer is not as committed to their store. I presume they believe since we didn’t fork over the thousands it takes to launch brick and mortar store.
I may have not spent that much money but the time it took me to get up and running a professional looking site should prove that I am committed to my business. I have been working on this project for about year and designed and developed my online boutique myself. I designed the logo and I personally cut every image to make sure they stay in the confines of the image sizes. Time is just as valuable and sometimes even more valuable in my eyes.
Another concern that came up was that designers didn’t want to over saturate the market with their product line. This is a valid concern. Another option for designers is to develop an affiliate program. This allows online retailers the opportunity to act as “sales reps” for the line. This is an inexpensive way to get your brand exposed to the public.
Like I said, most of the people were perceptive to online retailers and most even allow for drop shipping. I am happy to say that I found many products I can’t wait to add to my online baby boutique. Please check us out, often as I will be adding new products weekly.
And as far as my online baby boutique being just a hobby, I’m in this for the long haul. My goal is to become financially independent by this time next year. The most rewarding part will be having the time to spend with my daughter and “coming soon” son.
